Why a Structured Routine Is Key to Mental Health Recovery

Dealing with mental health issues can be very challenging, and it may be hard to know how to get the right help. While it’s virtually impossible to find concrete statistics on how many people treat their mental health disorders, the National Institute of Mental Health estimates that only 50% of people with mental illness receive treatment.

This article focuses on one way to aid with mental health recovery: having a structured routine. It’s a key component of mental health treatment cycles.

Mental Health Disorders

Numerous mental health disorders exist, and some are more common than others. Looking at the general population, the majority of mental health diagnoses are under the following categories:

  • Anxiety: Anxiety plagues millions of people and is the most common mental health disorder. It manifests as symptoms that revolve around feelings of intense worry and uneasiness, and those with anxiety can be truly scared of doing seemingly simple things. There are multiple types of anxiety disorders, such as social anxiety, separation anxiety, and general anxiety.
  • Bipolar disorder: While not as common as anxiety, bipolar disorder affects many individuals and causes a range of symptoms. Most notably, those with bipolar disorder will suffer from very severe shifts in mood and energy level. One moment, an individual might be highly excitable and then feel lethargic and down.
  • Depression: Depression is both a mental health disorder and a symptom of many other mental health disorders. It is best described as a feeling of almost never-ending hopelessness that weighs down on an individual. One can have good days and bad days, though depression makes it hard to find pleasure in life and can damage self-worth.
  • Schizophrenia: Schizophrenia is one of the most severe mental illnesses and can cause hallucinations or delusions. Those with schizophrenia may struggle to think or behave clearly, and their interpretation of the world is difficult to formulate.

Structured Routines

Effective mental health recovery can (and should) involve many elements. One of those elements is having a structured routine that you follow every day, week, and month. Doing so is extremely beneficial because following a structured routine forms a pattern of healthy behaviors. Not only that, but having a plan in place can help with conditions like anxiety and depression.

What does a structured routine look like in terms of mental health recovery? The National Library of Medicine emphasizes the importance of things like:

  • A regular sleeping pattern
  • Eating balanced meals throughout the day
  • Appropriately incorporating leisure, social activities, and work or study

Establishing a healthy routine with these elements is like putting building blocks of an improved life, with the structured routines supporting better mental health. Establishing a healthy, structured routine can be an important step in enjoying long-term sobriety.

Mental Health Treatment from Jackson House

Here at Jackson House, we provide structured routines as part of our overall mental health treatment plans. Treatments are built around personal mental health conditions and carefully curated to help individuals.

A schedule is kept in support of individuals establishing a healthy routine while in residence at Jackson House. While the days at Jackson House may not all be the same, most days will include therapy sessions, attention to medication management, and action plan development.

That action plan is evidence of the ongoing support Jackson House provides after you complete your stay. Effectively, this plan outlines some key things for you to do for effective management of your symptoms. It’s a way of supporting a structured routine outside of our rehabilitation facility.

Jackson House Residential Care

Residential care, including around-the-clock support and evidence-based treatment, provides an environment where you can participate in a structured routine as part of your recovery process. Residential care gives you a homelike atmosphere with accommodations and amenities.

A Jackson House residential care center is a great place to establish structured routines because you’re removed from many of the main triggers you may experience outside of the center. You may also feel more relaxed in residential care, helping you stay on track with routines that may aid in long-term recovery.

Jackson House

Jackson House

We built Jackson House because we realized there was a critical gap in our healthcare system and many individuals with mental illnesses and substance abuse problems were struggling because of it. While there are many outpatient treatment options and locked, inpatient facilities there was nothing in the middle. Nothing to help people who needed around the clock care but wanted to receive treatment voluntarily, on their own terms. Jackson House is different. We provide clients with the level of care they need in a welcoming environment. When you walk through our doors, we will meet you wherever you’re at and help you on your journey toward feeling better.
