The Importance of Medication Management for Mental Health

Around 65 million people in the U.S. are prescribed medication to help improve their mental health. When taken as advised, prescribed mental health medication can minimize symptoms and potential complications, helping individuals to feel more like themselves again.

Medication management services, such as those offered at Jackson House facilities, can help you stay on top of your medication and treatment plans. Not only will this allow you to get the best possible results, but it can also prevent complications or the return of negative behaviors.

What Is Medication Management?

Simply put, medication management is the process of ensuring that individuals take the right medications at the right dosages and at the right times. It takes into account the situation someone is dealing with, pre-existing health conditions, and other medications that one may be taking.

Basically, medication management is to help ensure an individual is taking medication as advised. At home, someone may find that medication management is built around using a pillbox to store tablets for each day, for example.

At a residential care center, you may expect professionals to help develop medication management plans that work for clients and to be on hand to answer medication-related questions.

The Purpose of Medication Management

The purpose of medication management is to ensure that the person taking the medication gets the best possible results. This is because relatively small breaks in routine, such as missing a single tablet or taking tablets at different times of the day, can impact the medication’s overall effectiveness.

Without proper medication management in place, you may not be seeing the full benefits of your treatment. This could mean that you are dealing with the very symptoms you are trying to avoid.  Furthermore, it can sometimes take time to find the right medication or dosage. Medication management can help make this process as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Medication Management and Mental Health

Medication management is extremely important among those taking medication to better their mental health, whether they are dealing with anxiety, depression, or a different condition. When struggling, you may find it harder to stick to a routine or carry out tasks to support yourself properly, which could mean that taking medication becomes less of a priority, thus reducing benefits and increasing potential concerns.

Benefits of Professional Medication Management

Many individuals can benefit from medication management services, especially those dealing with complex mental health conditions.

Potential benefits include:

  • Reassurance in receiving service from a healthcare provider: There are many myths surrounding medication for mental health that make many individuals reluctant to take it, even if it has been prescribed to them. Talking to a highly trained and experienced healthcare provider can help rescue or remove these concerns. In cases of multiple medication use, another benefit is knowing that a professional is managing the safety parameters of medication interactions.
  • Identification of duplicate or unneeded medications: In some cases, an individual may be prescribed multiple medications to manage their mental health and other health conditions. Professional medication management services can help identify unneeded or duplicate medications, saving you money and preventing you from taking medication you do not need.
  • Correct dosages: Professional medication management services can also help ensure that you have been prescribed the correct dosage(s). Dosage decisions are based on a variety of factors, including the severity of your symptoms and your medical history. A trained professional will be able to take important factors into account when determining whether or not your dosage is correct or if it should be changed. A professional will also be able to support you in safely increasing or decreasing your dosage.
  • Care regarding medication-related side effects: While mental health medication can be helpful, it can also have negative side effects. A healthcare professional offering medication management services can help you determine how to proceed if negative side effects become problematic.
