What is Depression?

When we talk about depression, we’re not describing typical feelings of sadness, such as those you feel in response to regular life events and emotions. What we’re talking about is a mood disorder that requires professional treatment, with symptoms that are both persistent and extreme.

There is not one single cause of depression; however, it commonly stems from life events that are particularly challenging, such as breakups, medical issues, loss, financial problems, major life changes, etc.

Depression can also be caused by changes in your hormones or your brain chemistry. This can happen because of things like chronic stress, pregnancy, grief, trauma, and more.

Finally, it can run in your family. If you have a relative who has been diagnosed with depression, you face a higher risk for it yourself.

About Our San Diego Depression Treatment

Our evidence-based depression treatment in San Diego is designed to help you take back control of your life, find symptom relief, and rediscover a sense of joy. We use four treatment approaches in our programs.

The goal of our cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is to help you recognize negative thought patterns and actions that are influencing your self-perception and contributing to your depression.

Through this type of talk therapy, you can work with your therapist to address these unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors in your life and develop coping skills and new ways of thinking.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which is another form of talk therapy, is based on CBT and is specifically for people who experience very strong emotions in their lives.

With DBT, you strive to accept difficult feelings that you struggle with and make positive changes despite them. Emotional regulation, interpersonal relationships, and mindfulness are examples of skills that DBT can help with.

For many people, medication is a necessary component of their depression treatment. This involves professional intervention, where psychiatrists with specialized training can help decide if medication is the appropriate call for you.

Many forms of antidepressants exist. Our team at Jackson House San Diego is here to help you find the right medication and dosage in order to help you feel more like yourself again.

Stress can affect your physical and mental health and may contribute to depression, whether it causes symptoms or makes existing symptoms worse.

Managing your stress typically involves a combination of different choices involving your sleep, nutrition, and exercise habits. Additionally, the Jackson House San Diego team can help you with stress management techniques like mindfulness through practices such as meditation or yoga.
