What Leads to Depression?

Depression can stem from challenging experiences, physiological changes, and genetics.

Relationship breakups, personal or financial loss, and major disruptions can all lead to depression. So can hormone or brain chemistry changes resulting from grief, trauma, pregnancy, and chronic stress. Also, research indicates that someone with a relative who has been diagnosed with depression has a heightened risk for the condition.

What Are Signs of Depression?

Signs can vary, but there are common symptoms that accompany depression. In order for a diagnosis of depression to be made, symptoms must have persisted for two weeks.

Depression can have effects on an individual’s thoughts and behaviors.

Following are depression symptoms:

  • Anxiety
  • Changes in regular eating patterns
  • Difficulty concentrating or decision-making
  • Fatigue
  • Feeling low self-worth
  • Feelings of despair, emptiness, hopelessness, or sadness
  • Irritability
  • Lack of interest in once-enjoyed activities
  • Memory issues
  • Mood swings
  • Nervousness
  • Slowed thoughts, speech, or movement
  • Sleep changes (more sleep or insomnia)
  • Thoughts of suicide

Depression Treatment from Jackson House Ventura

The professional team at Jackson House Ventura offers depression treatment to help individuals regain control, experience relief, and enjoy greater mental health. Our approach to treatment includes:

Three women sitting near one another. The woman in the center is wearing glasses and holding her hand about shoulder height.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

This type of therapy is included in treatment to help individuals recognize thought patterns and actions that negatively affect self-perception and add to experienced depression. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a talk therapy for developing coping skills and improving thoughts.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Based on CBT, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is also a talk therapy. This treatment approach is for individuals with strong emotional responses. DBT promotes acceptance of difficult feelings and, despite them, making positive decisions. This type of therapy involves building skills for emotional regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal communication.

Medication Management

Medication can be an important aspect of depression treatment. We draw on healthcare expertise in determining on an individual basis if medication is an appropriate treatment approach. Medication management services go beyond prescription, as we take careful attention to make sure medications are administered safely.

Stress Management

Stress can take a mental and physical toll, whether causing or amplifying depression symptoms. Our treatment approach gives attention to mindfulness for stress management through the techniques of meditation and yoga.

Dual Diagnosis Care

For some individuals, a mental health condition such as depression is accompanied by a substance use disorder. Such a co-occurrence is called a dual diagnosis. Jackson House offers dual diagnosis care, treating both the mental illness and the substance use disorder simultaneously.

We partner with Jackson House Addiction Recovery Centers in San Diego, a center focused on substance abuse treatment. As a dual diagnosis involves both substance use addiction and mental illness, treatment is offered at the Jackson House Addiction Recovery Centers location and our Jackson House facilities, including our center in Ventura. Determination as to where dual diagnosis treatment will be offered is made on a client-by-client basis.

Personalized Treatment Plans

We provide clients with tailored treatment plans. Our team takes time to establish plans that account for individual client circumstances to help provide care that fits.

Attention to Long-Term Healing

Our treatment also includes skills and tools for use following a client’s stay at our center. We want individuals to be prepared for success upon completion of their treatment plans.

Benefit from Aftercare Support

Jackson House Ventura also offers aftercare services to support long-term wellness.

Before individuals leave the center, we work to ensure each has a safe residence, a plan for handling difficult situations, and a support system. In addition, during the first 60 days following treatment, we strive to keep in contact with those who have completed their treatment, checking in to support their adjustment to life away from our center. We also support an alumni group. This group holds weekly meetings, has social gatherings, and arranges service opportunities.

Connect with Our Team

In addition to providing care for depression, we offer care for anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other conditions.

If you or a loved one could benefit from mental health services, please contact our team. We invite questions about our approach and welcome opportunities to support individuals through professional, evidence-based mental health care.
