We built Jackson House because we realized there was a critical gap in our healthcare system and many individuals with mental illnesses and substance abuse problems were struggling because of it. While there are many outpatient treatment options and locked, inpatient facilities there was nothing in the middle. Nothing to help people who needed around the clock care but wanted to receive treatment voluntarily, on their own terms. Jackson House is different. We provide clients with the level of care they need in a welcoming environment. When you walk through our doors, we will meet you wherever you’re at and help you on your journey toward feeling better.
How Residential Treatment Helps Support the LGBTQ+ Community

Due to the environment and level of care available in residential treatment programs, those in the LGBTQ+ community may find these programs helpful for providing support in working toward improved mental wellness, addiction recovery, or dual diagnosis, which is the co-occurrence of mental health problems and substance addiction.
Helping Support the LGBTQ+ Community
LGBTQ+ individuals may deal with stress as they struggle to feel accepted by society, and many in this community develop mental health problems. Linking to results of a 2015 national study, the National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that “LGBTQ+ adults are more than twice as likely as heterosexual adults to experience a mental health condition.”
As for substance abuse, Addiction Center reports, “An estimated 20 to 30% of the LGBTQ+ community abuses substances, compared to about 9% of the general population.”
This comes together to mean a higher proportion of people in the LGBTQ+ community may suffer from dual diagnosis, that is, co-occurring mental health problems and substance addiction.
Residential treatment programs are an effective way of treating mental health disorders and addictions. In residential treatment programs, individuals live in a treatment center while they receive healthcare and are positioned for around-the-clock support and supervision.
Treatment at Jackson House
Jackson House residential treatment is designed to increase and support overall wellness, allowing people to get to the bottom of their problems and work through them from the ground up. It gives people in the LGBTQ+ community time to feel supported through various treatment options, and they benefit from:
- Compassionate care
- Being in a safe and inclusive environment
- Getting constant mental health support
- Engaging in individual and group therapy sessions
A zero-judgment approach is one reason treatment from Jackson House may help members of this particular community feel comfortable with a residential care program. Mental health support is crucial when you consider the link between mental health and substance abuse, as well as the increased likelihood of LGBTQ+ people experiencing mental health problems.
We provide a wide range of treatment options at Jackson House as part of our residential programs. Treatment is built to align with the circumstances of the patient, meaning individuals receive tailored treatment plans to tackle their health conditions and individual situations.
Our residential treatments focus on the following aspects:
- Accommodations: We want to provide a friendly atmosphere where residents feel safe. Clients receive comfortable rooms and incredible support systems to help them feel at ease during their residence.
- Client Expectations: Jackson House can provide tools and support to help individuals get better, but we also expect individuals to be involved. Residents are expected to participate in their treatment and truly make an effort— it’s an important component to seeing results.
- Family Environment: Residential treatment can be scary because individuals are away from home for an extended period. That’s why we encourage families to support their loved ones receiving treatment.
- Nutrition: Residents receive healthy meals every day to make sure they’re eating correctly. We believe an effective mental health and substance abuse recovery plan involves good nutrition.
- Structure: All days differ at Jackson House, yet we follow a similar structure to help residents flow into a natural routine. Residents having a daily plan and knowing what they’re doing each day can help recovery during residential treatment and support the continuation of healthy habits following residential treatment.
Treatment for Various Conditions
We’re able to offer residential treatment for many mental health conditions, including those that are highly prevalent within the LGBTQ+ community.
- Anxiety: This is the most common mental illness, and something that many LGBTQ+ individuals suffer from. Anxiety manifests as various disorders and can become debilitating in everyday life. Our treatment helps individuals come to terms with their particular anxiety disorder and work toward managing their symptoms so they can live a fulfilling life.
- Bipolar disorder: This mental health disorder is less common than anxiety but involves severe mood swings and changes in energy or activity levels. It’s hard to go about everyday tasks with a bipolar disorder, but we help individuals understand what causes mood swings and how to treat this condition.
- Depression: As a serious mental health problem, depression manifests as a feeling of hopelessness. Many mental health conditions end up resulting in depression as another symptom. Residential care is an effective way to treat depression.
- Schizophrenia: Often confused with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia warps the perception of the world and changes how those with this condition behave and interact with other individuals. It can worsen without treatment.
- Trauma: Many people in the LGBTQ+ community experience traumatic events that shape their lives and that stay with them. Residential treatment can help individuals work through deep trauma and come out the other side feeling revitalized.
- Dual diagnosis: As mentioned earlier, mental health problems can accompany substance addiction. Jackson House offers residential treatment plans to help those with mental illness, addiction, and dual diagnosis.
We also provide a Veterans Program. It’s specifically designed to help those who have served in the military deal with challenges. Jackson House wants to provide care to veterans who deal with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, or other conditions.
