We built Jackson House because we realized there was a critical gap in our healthcare system and many individuals with mental illnesses and substance abuse problems were struggling because of it. While there are many outpatient treatment options and locked, inpatient facilities there was nothing in the middle. Nothing to help people who needed around the clock care but wanted to receive treatment voluntarily, on their own terms. Jackson House is different. We provide clients with the level of care they need in a welcoming environment. When you walk through our doors, we will meet you wherever you’re at and help you on your journey toward feeling better.
AI Counseling Versus Human Counseling
Counseling is one of the most fundamental parts of your mental wellness journey. And with the technological advancements that have been made, today you can access therapeutic support through in-person sessions, virtual sessions, or even through artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots.
For counseling, AI and people offer different things. Each brings its own potential positives and pitfalls that leave you wondering which choice will be best for you.
It’s important that you understand as much as you can about both choices so that you can make an informed decision for your mental health.
AI’s Approach To Counseling
When it comes to AI, counseling services and mental health support can come from a range of different tools, apps, or chatbots.
Digital therapeutics (DTx) are software programs that help with preventing, treating, and diagnosing mental health conditions. They are clinically backed and typically recommended by a licensed practitioner.
Chatbot therapy and wellness apps can also help with counseling or mental health support by teaching healthy habits, pointing you toward coping skills, and more.
AI typically focuses on detecting the problem and helping users to address it by providing honest, evidence-based solutions. These resources can be a great source of information and point you in a healthy direction; however, they differ from human counselors in several key ways.
Human Counseling
On the other hand, human counseling involves speaking with a licensed professional, whether through an in-person or a virtual session.
In these sessions, you talk to someone who has been through rigorous training and obtained qualifications to help them understand the way that the brain works, the way that people work, and strategies for mental health management.
Counseling sessions involve back-and-forth verbal communication, where your therapist talks, asks you questions, and listens while you answer. They are unpredictable in nature, because instead of getting programmed responses, you are receiving genuine input from another person.
In these sessions, you can also benefit from evidence-based practices and find tools for healing while experiencing human connection and understanding.
Positives And Pitfalls
One of the biggest benefits of AI counseling is that it serves as a low-cost option. For those who struggle to afford or get coverage for traditional therapy, this is a great alternative to get quick answers and guidance.
AI counseling is also available 24/7, which means that you can skip the waiting period and get the help that you need with one click. Some people also feel more comfortable speaking to AI due to the anonymity it offers. Others feel less judged and don’t worry as much about any social repercussions.
Unfortunately, AI support lacks a genuine human connection. Though it can mirror human tendencies, the level of understanding that comes with people will not be there.
Counseling is not perfect with people either, with the potential for wait times, imperfect answers, and other flaws that come from simply being human. Speaking to another person about your emotions will never be perfect, but it does offer crucial things that AI doesn’t.
When you talk to a counselor, no matter how different they may be from you, you are talking to someone who has also gone through difficult things in their own life. Even if they don’t share your specific struggles, they do know what it means to experience hard things.
Further, their training in mental health means that they have dedicated years of their time to understanding and helping people. Their input, advice, and guidance will come from a combination of life experience, professional training, and a place of true empathy, and they can provide you with compassion and support that are unique to the human experience.
What Type of Counseling Should You Choose?
Mental health is a deeply personal journey, and everyone has to find the strategies that will work best for them. The Jackson House team believes that each person has their own path toward mental wellness, and we offer in-person therapeutic support for anyone who is interested.
Through guided individual and group sessions, our professionals can help you work through trauma, process things from your past, find methods for managing mental health symptoms, and much more. We are here to listen and support you however you need.
AI can serve as a wonderful mental health resource, but it is often best used as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for human counseling. Through a combination of support from AI, friends, family, and qualified professionals, you can experience many mental health benefits and find strategies for long-term healing.
